FAQ'S Below, I have listed some responses to the kind of questions I am often asked. 1 You're an idiot, your rankings are stoopid! 2 We didn’t play this week, but we went up in your rankings! 3 But my team is better than the other team!! 4 These rankings are crap! 5 Why? 6 Who are you anyhow..? 7 Can I REALLY make money using your predictions??? You're an idiot, your rankings are stoopid! There are three types of people who, generally, take exception with my rankings, the Lurker, the Mathematician, the Battered Fan. a) the LURKER - we all recognise this guy. He hangs around EVERY newsgroup, sending out his half a dozen messages each day, each message putting down something someone else has said or done - and he usually says it in a vulgar manner. We can ignore this fool! b) the MATHEMATICIAN - ahhh, what a joy these people are. What ever system you devise, they always want more and more variables included. It doesn’t matter if something that could be written on one line is turned into a 500 page volume, all that matters is you consider and account for every possible variable, regardless of the relevance. Tiresome! and c) the BATTERED FAN - poor things. These are the ones who at the beginning of each season actually believe their team will do better this year. And even when, after 6 games, they are 0-6, or 1-5, they still blindly believe their team is on its way to the playoffs! So when my rankings suggest they are actually 27th out of 31 teams they cant take it anymore. Hey guys and gals!! DON’T TAKE IT OUT ON ME!!! Go and sack your coach, or fine your overpaid players or sue the team management, just don’t take it out on me! We didn’t play this week, but we went up in your rankings! Yes, this is possible. The teams above you, with the same number of wins as your team, may have lost this week. Teams with the same number of points are then ranked on their points for/points against record - their "percentage". If a team above yours losses badly, its points for/against ratio will drop, possibly below yours and that’s why you go up. There are many other statistical measures I could use instead of the "percentage" system, most of these would also allow a team that doesn’t play to rise in the rankings if teams above them lose. But my team is better than the other team!! Ahh, now we get to the crux of the problem!! Most people who complain about my rankings usually do so from a biased viewpoint. The usual argument goes like this… team A beats team B by 10 pts, team C beats team B by 20 pts - therefore team C is better than team A - right?? Wrong! We are talking about sport. All that matters is whether you win , or lose. You don’t make the play offs if you lose nearly all your games but manage to beat the top team.This is not a knock out format. The more games you win, the higher up the ladder you go.It doesnt matter if your opponents are weak or strong, you can only beat who you play. These rankings are crap! Well, maybe they are, but at least I am trying! Nowhere have I promised that these rankings are perfect. I create these rankings because I find it interesting, and because many others find them interesting. Thousands of people from around the world view these rankings each day, so just because you don’t like them, that doesn’t mean they are "crap". However, if you look at my Top 4 last year, you will find that 3 of the 4 played in the Conference Championship games, so that suggests my rankings are reasonably accurate. Also, the NFL has a top 10 rankings each week that are picked by public vote. The top 10 as voted by nfl.com website users is usually pretty close to my top 10 ranked teams, so, again, I'm not that far off! And if you don’t like my system, suggest a better one! Why? Because as a non US citizen I find the present system baffling.You can not tell, at a glance, what a teams true position in the league is. So, I have created a single league "ladder". Of course, all teams don’t play each other - which is a pity. Perhaps in an ideal world the NFL would create two 16 team divisions with each team playing the others in its division once and then the Top 6 in each division would advance to the playoffs. This would guarantee that the best teams in the competition are involved. The present system does not. Who are you anyhow..? I am an online sports producer based in Adelaide, South Australia. I produce statistical data for other sporting websites as well as producing my own sport rankings. I am statistically involved in cricket, rugby, Australian football, International Rules (a combination between Aussie Rules and Ierlands Gaelic football), as well as producing my NFL rankings. And I create ideas for sports - new formats, new competitions, new rules etc…a sports consultant of sorts! I suppose I am a futurist, rather than a conservative, when it comes to sport. I am always looking for a way to push a sport along its evolutionary path. My favourite "football" quest is to see all the worlds "oval ball" football codes confront each other - either in "combination rules" adventures or through "individual football events" such as a World Football kicking competition - perhaps even with football kicking becoming an Olympic event, after all, its no more ridiculous than throwing a hammer or a javelin! Can I REALLY make money using your predictions??? Yes, but like ANY investment, there is a small risk. If you follow my instructions each week, you are very likely to achieve the dividend I have suggested is possible. What does it cost??? First, there is the US$50 fee to me (this is once off and for the whole season).And because I only take on a limited number of people get in quick or you miss out!! Second, it costs you what ever you initially want to invest - $1, $100, $1000 - its up to you and your betting shop how much you invest! And then its up to you if you want to let the money ride, or re invest a different amount each week. Again its up to you and your bookie!
