The first rugby World Cup was held in 1987, an invites only affair of 16 nations. Australia and New Zealand hosted the first World Cup which was won by New Zealand. The second World Cup was held in the United Kingdom in 1991, with the 4 year cycle now being the established pattern. The Wallabies fought off a dour England to record their first World Cup victory, in the last Cup of the amateur era. By the time of the next World Cup in 1995 many changes had occurred in the world of rugby. Not only had the value of a try increased to 5 points, South Africa had rejoined the rugby community and, indeed, hosted and won the event. And then in 1999, the World Cup went to Europe with Wales co hosting with the England and games being held throughout the UK, Ireland and France. Australia won in the new and magnificent Millenium Stadium in Cardiff and became the first nation to win two World Cups.
